It’s been a busy 10 days for the Buffalo Bills, cleaning house by firing Chan Gailey and his staff, and hiring Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone. Today they announced that Mike Pettine would take over the defense, and Nate Hackett will join coach Marrone from Syracuse as his offensive play caller. While both are young, especially Hackett (33), they bring a wealth of football knowledge, and an aggressive mindset.

Doug Marrone has a storied history, going back to the mid 80′s when he played as an offensive lineman at Syracuse University. He had a brief stint in the NFL, experiencing Don Shula’s two a days, giving him credibility to any NFL player. He coached in a few colleges as an assistant, before catching on in the NFL as the offensive line coach of the New York Jets, working under legendary Herm Edwards. He then moved on to New Orleans to serve as Sean Payton’s offensive coordinator, working with Drew Brees. He left the Saints to take is dream job as head coach at Syracuse. He was there for four years, where he turned around the worse program in Division I football. He led them to two bowl victories in the final three years he coached, and in his final season led a team that shattered 11 school records. Many big names in the NFL are praising the Bills for their hire, and in fact no one has said anything bad about him. His past players love him, Sean Payton describes him as “ready” to be a Head Coach at the NFL level, and he has won the majority of the fan base over in a matter of days.

Hackett, the son of former Pitt Panthers and USC head coach Paul Hackett, called the shots for a Syracuse offense that broke 11 school records in 2012, including Donovan McNabb’s passing yards in a season record. He was a part of developing quarterback Ryan Nassib, a top college prospect in this years draft. His Father coached for over 40 years, and Nate credits him as his mentor, and describes him as “always there to answer questions”. He is a familiar face to the Bills, as he served as offensive quality control coach from 2008-2009. While there, he worked with Alex VanPelt, and was handed the 1994 “K-Gun” offense playbook by Jim Kelly himself. Elements of that offense can be seen in Syracuse’s no huddle up-tempo offense they used often this season. Heading that offense was Ryan Nassib, who had a 62.4% completion rate, threw for 3749 yards (in just 12 games), and had 26 TD’s versus only 10 interceptions.

Pettine worked under Rex Ryan for 9 years, and his start in the NFL came under Brian Billick. He started as an assistant in Baltimore in 2001, and followed Rex to New York where he was the Jets Defensive Coordinator for the last 4 years. In that time he shared play calling duties With Rex, but led the defense in practices. He was a part of developing a Jets defense that never finished worse than 8th overall in his time with them. He declined a contract extension offer from the Jets, and decided to head to Buffalo to get out of Rex Ryan’s rather large shadow. He brings a very aggressive attitude and style, something that is more than welcome among fans. Having already put to rest the speculation of what the Bills base defense will be, Pettine said the identity will reflect the talent on the roster. He will evaluate each players talents, and find ways to use them, instead of applying any one scheme to his players. This is the exact opposite of what Dave W. did last year.

The buzz is surprisingly good on Buffalo’s hires, all the way around. Almost all analysts and media are taking a “wait and see” approach, but all three coaches are drawing high praise from major names around the NFL, anyone that has worked with any of the new coaches has nothing but great things to say. Rex Ryan even said in his interview how great a coach Pettine is, and how he hoped he wouldn’t go to Buffalo (sorry to disappoint Rexy).

The Bills did the opposite of what they have done for years. They hired a coach out of college, a club first. Marrone was employed, while the majority of past coaches (including our own beloved Marv Levy) were fired coaches elsewhere before we hired them. None of the coaches from the 13 year drought has been a head coach since being fired or leaving Buffalo, with Mularkey recently being fired by the Jaguars, a testament to the failure of the front office to assemble a winning staff. With Ralph Wilson handing over control to Russ Brandon, this is truly a new beginning for the Bills. Marrone was Brandon’s hire, and would never have been hired if Buddy and Ralph were still in control. They would have gone the retread route, likely hiring Ken Whisenhunt, who the Bills were rumored to be in contract negotiations with before going with Marrone. Buffalo got the jump on Cleveland, who had reportedly interviewed him and were interested, but held out for Chip Kelly, only to get left at the altar. Philadelphia and San Diego were also interested in him. The Bills identified their man, and wasted no time getting the deal inked. They also wasted no time in finding capable coordinators as well, unlike Chan Gailey, who took until mid February to make his hire at defensive coordinator three years ago.

In my opinion, the Bills made some extremely bold decisions, and I love it. They bailed on the safe pick, and made a bold and aggressive one. They got the jump on other teams, and stole an employed man from a place he loved, and loved him. Marrone has never been fired, unlike all of our past coaches. His youth and passion for the game, as well as his love for the region, has rejuvenated the franchise overnight. He made swift decisions, got young coaches that want to be here, and that are truly hungry for success. I, for one, got exactly what I have been asking for, and that is something different. As much as I would hate to be sitting here in three years talking about a 16 year playoff drought, I would still support this hire. This is a sink or swim move, and one that will look like one of the smartest moves in franchise history if it pays off. If it doesn’t many will call it one of the dumbest. I for one will view it as a bold move to change the face of a franchise, something that has been needed for years. To many old worn out faces have come through the doors here, and for once, we have exuberant men standing at the podium, happy to be taking questions, instead of looking annoyed and confused. Hackett’s own four year old son is an avid Bills fan, as described by his own father. These coaches will bleed red white and blue along with it’s fans, and will hold themselves and the players accountable. No team is better at selling hope than the Buffalo Bills, and once again, I’m buying all in. GO BILLS!

Bills start offseason with some big changes!

January 3, 2013 in 360 News, Bill News, Bills Games, Uncategorized

As we all know by now, Chan and friends have been canned. He went graciously, and left some very kind words for Bills fans. I will root for his success, gladly, elsewhere. Russ Brandon is now in charge, and brings a youthful look to the organization, along with some forward thinking. Bringing a “money-ball” type analytic department in is top on the list for Russ, outside of the new coach search. While many are skeptical that this approach will be successful in the NFL, including our own hero Bill Polian, I am personally intrigued to say the least about this. Any change is welcome at this point, and if it means paying closer attention to our players and their production, I am for it. What effect it will have remains to be seen, and will depend on the ability of the department to interpret the results, as there are many variables in the NFL vs. MLB or NBA.

Buddy, Russ, Doug Whaley, and Jim Overdorf head the search for a Coach, and have already assembled an impressive list of candidates. Interviewing Ken Whisenhunt and Ray Horton the day the announcement was made that Russ was in charge was in itself an aggressive move, even if fans don’t want another retread. The fact that they immediately  flew across the country to start interviews was a refreshing sign of things to come. Securing interviews with Mike McCoy and Chip Kelly, along with following through on the reported interest of Lovie Smith, shows Russ was serious when he said he would “Leave no stone unturned”. There are also reports that there is mutual interest between the Bills and Doug Marrone, as well as interest in Redskins DC Jim Tressel These are all competent coaches, and would be a vast improvement over the last regime.

However, they each have major flaws and most of them would require much more than just a few pieces falling into place to equal success. Whisenhunt is nearly identical to Chan. Conservative, but good offensive mind when he has the right pieces to work with. He needs a top tier QB to be successful, and fans were outraged to hear that the first candidate up is one similar to what was just fired. He was the only coach to punt more than Chan Gailey inside his own 40, not a popular stat with Bills fans.  He needs to hire a top tier DC, as he has little defensive knowledge

Ray Horton was a superb defensive player, and is proving to be one of the up and coming defensive minds in the league. He would add a fire to the locker room, and any player that has played for him has loved playing for him. He gets the most out of his players, and knows how to lead group of football players. He has said that he would not call any plays as a head coach, and would delegate that to his coordinators, a welcome change from Chan’s refusal to give up play calling on the offensive side of the ball; a task that ended up overwhelming him, and lead to his release. However, Ray has no experience as a head coach, and would need to hire not just a solid OC, but a capable DC that would be willing to take input and not have total control over the defense, which could be a tall order for a coach without much pedigree, or connections to multiple coaches that guys like Lovie Smith would have…leading us to:

Lovie Smith was the only coach (as far as i know) that called the Bills first. We all know what he can do. He puts together some of the most feared defenses assembled, and commands the respect of all his players. Devin Hester has contemplated retiring since Lovie was fired. Lovie has the most experience out of any candidate on this list, includingl a Super Bowl appearance with an awful starting QB, Rex Grossman. He could take the talent of the Bills defense and turn them into a top 5 unit within two years, and has deep connections to players and coaches, including pending free agent Brian Urlacher (OK I’m dreaming a little bit  here). Smith’s greatest weakness has been his inability to hire a solid offensive coordinator, but that is something I feel Buddy can help with. His expressed interest has already won over the fans, as the vast majority has started campaigning for him. Lovie would require the least out of all candidates to get the Bills to being a true competitor, and is likely the least of a gamble. However, he will undoubtedly be asking for a lot more money that most of the other candidates lined up, and paying head coaches has never been a characteristic of the Bills front office before. We will soon find out if that was all Ralph Wilson, or a joint decision by him and the front office. His drafting has also been questioned, but that may be a result of the Bears scouting department. Doug Whaley has proven himself more than capable as head of the scouting department, and is likely to be the GM of the Bills in the not so distant future. His scouting abilities, coupled with Smith’s coaching abilities, could be what this franchise needs to turn it around.

Now i will look at the two college candidates the Bill shave shown interest in. There are a number of college coaches either interested in jumping to the NFL, or have NFL teams interested in them. Two of the top five candidates are meeting with the Bills.

Doug Marrone is the head coach of the Syracuse Orangemen. He is praised for turning a program that has long been a joke into a team that has won two bowl games in three years. He developed Ryan Nassib, a top QB prospect in this years draft, and it is thought that the two could wind up being a package deal. Doug is a local favorite, as most Bills fans also follow Cuse teams as well, and no one can deny what he has done with a program that has a very hard time recruiting football talent (sounds familiar doesn’t it?). He has knowledge on both sides of the ball, and his players show a great amount of respect for him, as does the college. He does lack experience as a head coach in the NFL, but some big risks will need to be taken by the Bills, and Marrone could be one of them. It should also be noted that many think Doug will end up staying in ‘Cuse with a larger pay rate when all is said and done.

Lastly, Chip Kelly. Chip has done some absolutely amazing things with the Oregon Ducks, and his talent will likely be on display tonight against Kansas State in the fiesta bowl. The Ducks have averaged over 50 points a game this season. The Bills, somewhat conveniently, planned their interview with Ex-Cards coach Ken Whisenhunt at the same time that Kelly was in town for the Fiesta bowl, another aggressive and intelligent move by the Bills brass. There are a number of concerns with Kelly, such has his lack of NFL experience, and the skepticism that his sceme will not translate to the NFL (even though it already has started to, Patriots coach Bill Belichick credits Kelly’s up tempo offense to his own teams faster pace that has been employed this season). The fact that a coach with Belichick’s pedigree respects a man like Chip is reason enough to pursue him. He is the hot commodity of all the college potentials, and would bring instant credibility and relativity to the Bills, something this new President seems to crave. Chip would also require a very good defensive coach to run the D, and is said to want a lot of control over personnel, something i think Buddy would be willing to do. Chip would likely embrace the idea of competing with Belichick, as well as going against defensive guru Rex Ryan, and that competitive spirit would be welcome here in Buffalo

The list will likely not stop there, with reported interest in Jim Tressel, and rumors of Bruce Arians being a possible target as well. There are other coaches out there that would be a good upgrade as well, Mike Zimmer and Hue Jackson come to mind, but we will just have to sit back and see what the Bills do. Hopefully they have learned from the mistakes of the past 13 years, and find the guy to restore our team to winning ways.

I’d like to start off by thanking Pepsi’s Rookie of the week program for making this interview happen. Just a few weeks ago i wrote my first blog, and now I have just completed my first player interview with Buffalo Bills Top-10 pick of 2012, Stephon Gilmore. Here’s what he had to say!

On behalf of 360bills.com thank you for taking the time to talk with me, and…

Congratulations on being a top ten draft pick. With that kind of label, did you feel any added pressure to perform in your rookie year?

“I don’t think there is any added pressure because at the end of the day it comes down to me doing what I always do, I always have played to the best of my ability and so every time I step out the field I’m going to play my hardest no matter what.”

How do you feel you are adjusting to the speed of the NFL?

“I feel like I’ve adjusted pretty well, I mean right now where I’m at now I don’t feel like I’m a rookie any more so I mean it feels like I’m just going out there and playing football, I know I still got a lot to learn but I’m just taking it one day at a time and playing to the best of my abilities.”

What did you think of Toronto and the experience the Bills are trying to create there?

” It was a good experience, a  lot of fans came out to see us play in Toronto, only thing I didn’t like was we didn’t come out with a win, we didn’t play a good game but it was a great experience to go up there and play my first Toronto game.”

The defense had vastly improved since the bye week, holding opponents to 19 points a game. What went wrong against Seattle, and how can you guys as a unit improve from it?

“I think the quarterback, because he bought time., he’s a great quarterback. I don’t think we mentally prepared as well as we could have, with the type of quarterback that he is he can really buy time. He gets the D-line to play cautious, and we were a little to cautious.”

Evaluate not just yourself, but the secondary as a whole. What is going well, and what areas need improvement?

“I think we’ve been getting better and better every game and now it’s down to the end of the season I think that we all have been playing ok, we know we can play together, but I think we hold them [the secondary] together, I mean this is our first year everybody being together, so I think we got to end the season on a good note and carry it over to next year.”

Who is the toughest WR you have faced so far?

“Probably the toughest wide receiver I’ve gone against…I mean theres a lot of great recievers out there and you always got to prepare, but I would say Andre Johnson, I mean if he’s running around and I can guard him, but if he does catch a pass you gotta tackle him, he’s one the hardest I’ve had to tackle.”

Chan Gailey said in his postgame interview the buck stops with him. Would you agree with him or is there more than meets the eye with the struggles of the team this year?

I mean of course he will take the blame on himself, but we have to take the accountability and do what we can do better, because we essentially are out there playing the game and we have to fix those mistakes I mean we watched the film, we know what we have to do to win so I think we have to take the accountability to prepare.”

Of all the adversity this team has seen this year, there has been very little finger pointing-  can you explain the integrity of the team and how you all maintain a positive relationship with each other.

“At the end of the day you just have to stick with each, we have our ups and downs and we have to figure out what we did wrong and right.”

What do you do personally to stay pumped up for each week, and before games?

“Listen to music, and just be around my team mates, some of my team mates get me amped up for the game, but pretty much just listen to music. When I play football I get amped up.”

With the end of the season approaching what are your plans until OTA’s and spring camp?

“I don’t know yet probably just take some time off, from a long season; I had to go through the combines,  OTA’s, rookie mini camps, training camp, I been playing football for a while now, I’m probably just going to relax and get my body back. After that start training and get ready for next year.”

How are you adjusting to buffalo?

“I am adjusting pretty well, I mean it reminds me of my home town in Rock Hill SC, it’s a small town but a football town. So that’s one thing I like about it.”

360bills.com is the voice of the bills fans, do you have any closing words for them?

“I know it’s not been a great season this year, and we’re going to try to turn things around these last two games and end it on a great note, and start next season off with a winning record and keep it going.”

Where do we go from here?

Sunday was a new low for Bills fans. After suffering humiliating defeats against the Patriots and 49ers in the beginning of the season, it seemed the worst was behind us for what was quickly becoming an all to familiar Buffalo football season. Then the 5th annual Toronto series against a Seahawk team on the rise happened. Coming off a 58-0 drubbing of the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle came into Toronto red hot. Buffalo was coming in off a disappointing loss to the Rams, down but not quite out. The Bills defense would revert to it’s early season form, out of place and unprepared, and the offense would continue to regress under the failing Chan Gailey system. 50-17 represents an uninspiring and rather difficult-to-swallow season.

Thus begs the question, “Where do we go from here”?  The faithful die-hards of the Western NY area are left scratching their heads, as we witness our 8th straight losing season, and 13th year without a playoff appearance. Suddenly we are looking back at interviews with GM and HC at spring camps, the statements of “No excuses” come to mind. Someone has to be held accountable. There are many people to point to finger at, players not being in the right position, not knowing assignments, and not playing sound fundamental football. You could blame the coaches, and with merit. Players appear unprepared for situational football, unsure of their assignments, and the communication seems almost non existent. You could blame GM Buddy Nix and CEO Russ Brandon, who many feel have used publicity stunts and player signings just to sell false hope to fans. Many are critical of the Toronto series, and with a 1-4 record north of the border, that feeling is not only understandable but statistically justified.

Last but not least you could put the blame on the owner, Mr. Ralph Wilson. In failing health, no one knows just how involved Ralph really is, there have been no public appearances, no interviews, statements of any kind. Buddy Nix does claim to have contact with him at least weekly, but as far as what is discussed is kept quiet. With just one year on the lease, there is a high level of uncertainty in Buffalo.

Our stadium is one of the oldest, and largest in the league, with one of the smallest markets in the league as well. This, paired with the losing culture that has developed in the proud city, has led to frequent blackouts, unless a local business man buys out the remaining tickets to give the community their Bills. There seems to be no plan in place, no thought to the future. As it stands, The Wilson family has no interest in keeping the team. Once Ralph passes, the team would be up for sale, and likely sold to the highest bidder. Mr. Wilson can change that obviously by leaving the team in the hands of someone he knows and trusts (we all dream of a Jim Kelly owned Buffalo Bills).

Coming into the season, we thought we had filled just about every positional need we had, and now were focused on building depth behind our starters. It turned out that we were wrong, more than most imagined. There are the obvious needed upgrades, a true starting quarterback, a dependable group of linebackers, and a true #2 WR. Donald Jones was picking up nicely before his injury, and losing David Nelson early leaves some questions unanswered for the WR group, but need a big physical guy that can go up and catch a pass when covered, that true redzone threat, go to guy. Nigel Bradham has shown he can play, but needs some time to learn. Kelvin Sheppard has been up and down all season, but I have not given up on him just yet. Nick Barnett remains solid, but is not getting any younger, and did regress this season. We need a linebacker than can cover, and we need a defensive leader. Manti T’eo comes to mind as a strong candidate for our #1 pick this upcoming season. A true field general, and a player many see as the next Ray Lewis. Of course after recent comments made by Buddy Nix, we are all expecting an aggressive move up in the draft for a QB, but do not be surprised if it doesn’t happen. There is no RG3, Andrew Luck, or even Russel Wilson in the upcoming draft class. There will be a franchise QB to be had I am sure, but it is no where near as clear cut as last years draft. Many teams will reach for QB, and many will be disappointed. Ryan Nassib is an interesting 2nd round candidate, and if the Bills do pursue a defensive player in the first, I think has a chance at being drafted by Buffalo.

The obvious needs aside, some new concerns have arisen. With Fred Jackson landing on IR for the second year in a row, and suffering three injuries this season, his future and durability are in question. How effective will a 32 year old back be coming off yet another leg injury? Can CJ truly handle being a feature back? And will he ever actually be given a chance to prove he can? (17 carries in a game he was the starting and feature back) I would not be surprised in the least to see Buffalo draft a running back in the first three rounds come April.

With Eric Woods injury, it raises some serious concern as to how dependable he can be for the rest of his career. He has yet to finish a season, although when healthy is one of the best centers in the league. With Aaron Williams not playing up to expectations, our secondary is in need of some help as well, although rookies Stephon Gilmore and Ron Brooks to give hope for the future.  SS is also an area of concern. George Wilson has seen his playing time cut in half, and Da’Norris Searcy has not impressed many thus far. He is young, does posses a lot of physical talent, and is a solid tackler, but needs to work on his ball skills. With so many needs, uncertainty in many player and coaching positions, and very few answers coming from 1 Bills Drive, it leaves us with many more questions than answers.

It is uncertain times we as fans are in. It is now more than ever we must remain strong, through trying times, and support our team. I’m not telling you to run out and buy tickets to the jets game, I’ll admit I’m on the fence about going myself (make me an offer for my tickets…), but don’t give up. As hard as it is to watch the product put on the field, I would much rather be angry and screaming at my team then have nothing. Ask yourself, could you really ever love another football team as much as the Bills? If your like me, and regardless of the record always watch the game, check the websites for updates, and can never seem to put the jersey away until the season really is over, the answer is no. The community is every bit as important as the team, but it is the team that unites the community. The Thursday night game against Miami comes to mind, 80,000 of my closest friends smiling, laughing, singing, and cheering together in the national spotlight, our proud moment to shine, and shine we did. It’s moments like that that will always keep me coming back for more Bills football.

So where do we go from here? We go forward. We have reached an all time low. Many other teams and fans have been here. Think of the 0-16 Lions making a playoff berth just a few short years later. Look at where the Patriots franchise was before Tom Brady came to town. Look at how one man (Harbough) took a struggling 49ers team and turned them into one of the most feared teams in the league in one season. Something in Buffalo obviously has to change. After Sundays debacle many of us expected to wake up to the news that Chan and Dave W. were off applying to footlockers around the country this morning. That news may still come, and it should. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. The front office would be INSANE to retain both coaches for next year. You can start over and see success in one year. I point to Harbough and the 9ers again. They were one play from the super bowl, one year after not even hitting .500. Do not lose faith fellow fanatics! Remain vocal about your team, continue to support our players through these tough times, they are even less happy than you about where they are. We don’t lose a job when we lose a game, they might. Continue to show the country that we deserve the title of best fan base in the league (As NFL.com listed us earlier this season). Here’s to next season! ;-)

Why Chan Gailey Has Run Out of Time

December 10, 2012 in 360 News, Bill News, Bills Games

This is my first blog post, and it is regrettably a depressing and altogether unpleasant one. The obvious hot topic for us Bills fans right now is Chan Gailey’s current job status. We are on the brink of the completion of his third year. THE year. This was supposed to be the promised land for us. The culmination of two long  years of rebuilding, putting the right pieces in place, and solidifying roster depth, and what is there to show? A much lower cap ceiling and the same sub-par record. I know there are three games to go, and we have a decent chance at making 8-8, but we likely will end up 5-11. Why? because Chan has been consistent at one thing, and one thing only: coaching to lose. He refuses to utilize his talent in a way that will benefit the team, made obvious by the 8 total touches CJ Spiller received. He has failed to recognize the ability of his players, most notably Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is forced to do much more than he is clearly able to do. He publicly shows no faith in his kicker, as shown by not allowing him to attempt a 52 yard field goal in almost ideal conditions. So what is the culprit? The answer is the amount of responsibility Chan has on his plate. We have all seen the little kid at the buffet with way to much food on his plate, and ends up spilling half the food all over the place, leaving a large careless mess some poor soul has to clean up. Chan is that little kid, and Buddy Nix is that poor soul. Buddy put a very large amount of faith in both Chan and Fitzpatrick. It may look like those three ride and die together, but the truth is Buddy can alleviate his situation with the prompt firing of Chan Gailey, and the investment of a very early draft pick in a QB. Nix recognized his mistake earlier in the year by saying that he would not leave Buffalo without having a franchise QB in place. Chan did the opposite, almost sealing his fate, by backing Fitz after throwing another game away. Buddy did clarify that he wasn’t guaranteeing a quarterback in the first round, but with guys like Russel Wilson (A 3rd round pick) and other gems (Andy Dalton comes to mind as well) buried in the pool of college talent, there is still some hope that a guy can be found in those first early rounds.

I will get back to the topic at hand now…I do tend to rant. the draft is another section to be written another day. There are many stats and examples that show Chan’s inabilities, but the biggest for me is this. Spiller has carried the ball more than 20 times once this season. that was in a win against Miami. That number is unacceptable. Chan has used CJ getting winded as an excuse, along with his pass blocking deficiencies. I don’t buy it, and see it as the answer he came up with after the loss, not an in game decision. With Fred now out of the lineup, one would think that it is almost an afterthought that Spiller will get 20+ carries. The sad truth, is that he will likely see 12-17 total. After Fred got hurt yesterday, the entire crowd at the Ralph was buzzing the words “Spiller time”. Who took the next, and majority, of the remaining snaps? Dallas wash-out Tashard Choice. Don’t get me wrong, Tashard is a talented athlete and many teams would love to have a 2nd back as talented as our 3rd, however, Spiller should have been back there. Two deep passes that failed miserably were called instead of number 28. I can find no excuse for that, no matter how hard I try. It seems the only two people that could were Chan, and predictably enough, Ryan Fitzpatrick. And that, paired along with the deflated and hopeless look that has replaced what used to be his face, my fellow Bills fans, is why Chan Gailey should not see another game as a head coach.

Game Preview: Bills at Colts

November 25, 2012 in Bill News, Bills Game Previews

At 1:00pm EST today, the 4-6 Buffalo Bills will play the 6-4 Indianapolis Colts. The Colts will be fighting to maintain their spot as an AFC Wildcard team, and the Buffalo Bills better be ready to throw in the kitchen sink in an attempt to keep a wildcard spot within reach. A win today will not o Thinly bring them closer to a playoff spot, but it will also give them the advantage in a tie breaker over the Indianapolis Colts if that’s what they needed to make the playoffs.

The Colts have been playing extremely well and have been led by rookie sensation, Andrew Luck. Luck is’t like RGIII where he will make your jaw drop when you see him move around the pocket, but what he can do is throw a football at an elite level. The Colts have a solid group of receivers, and they have been getting open and making plays all season long. On defense, they have the ability to get after the passer, but overall, that is where their weaknesses are.

For the Bills to win this game they will need to control the clock and once again just put the ball on the ground and let Spiller and Jackson do the dirty work. The Colts will likely try and stop the run early to force the Bills to pass, but the Bills need to be persistent and continue to dictate the flow of the game with their dynamic duo of rushers. This is a must win for the Buffalo Bills.

Bills Can’t Handle Texans in 9-21 Loss

November 5, 2012 in Bill News, Bills Games

matt_schaub

The Buffalo Bills have dropped to 3-5 following their 9-21 loss in Houston to the Texans. We said for the Bills to win they were going to need to avoid careless turnovers, and until the end of the game when Fitzpatrick fumbled the ball away to end a drive, the Bills were rather careful with the football. But we also said that the Bills needed to find a way to run against the Texans stout run defense. The Bills did manage to pick up 4.9 yards per carry, however they only ran the ball 16 times.

The Bills need their backs to be effective for them to win games, but in this game the Bills abandoned the run and had Ryan Fitzpatrick throwing the ball 38 times. Meanwhile the Texans showed the Bills a balanced attack, they had Foster take 24 of the teams 32 rushes, and he picked up 111 yards and a touchdown. In the NFL, the run sets up the pass, and the threat of Foster getting the ball allowed Matt Schaub to complete 19 of his 27 attempts for 268 yards with two touchdowns. The Texans won because they used the game plan that the Bills should have used, using the run to set up the pass.

Next week the Bills will play the Patriots in New England, let’s hope they left Houston with a new offensive theory, because if they repeat what they tried in Houston, then they will not have a chance against the Patriots.

Following their bye week, the Bills hope to be well rested for their game against the 6-1 Houston Texans today. Usually the bye week allows a team to have an advantage in their game following the bye as a result of the extra time to prepare and for the players to take care of their injuries, but in this game, neither team will have that advantage, the Houston Texans are also coming off of their bye. With both teams well rested and well prepared, there should be no excuse for the Bills defense to play as poorly as we have seen them play in their four losses of this season.

The Texans have one of the most complete teams in the NFL, having an excellent offense and defense, they are a force to be reckoned with. However, for the first time since week one, both C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson should be 100% healthy, and hopefully their health is enough to overcome the stout run defense that the Houston Texans will have on the field in this affair. The Bills have the third best running game, and the Texans have the third best running defense, so something will have to give. For the Bills to have a chance to win this game, I will repeat what I’ve said for the past several games, they need to run the ball and not turn the ball over. Additionally, they will need to contain Foster and not allow him to have his way when running the ball. Forcing a few turnovers won’t hurt either!

Mario Williams is Considering Surgery

October 24, 2012 in Bill News

So far this season, Mario Williams has just 16 tackles and 3.5 sacks after his first seven games with the Buffalo Bills. Williams was signed away from the Houston Texans in the offseason for a six-year contract worth up to $100 million, but has not lived up to the fans, or the organizations original expectations. In previous seasons, he was arguably the best defensive end in the league, this season he hasn’t even sniffed that title. And Mario Williams doesn’t care!

Now let’s not all jump on Mario Williams for saying he doesn’t care, because what he said can easily be taken out of context. Williams just doesn’t care what people say, but doesn’t deny his motivation and desire to get back to his dominant form. In order to get back to wrecking havoc on opposing offenses, Williams is considering having surgery on his right wrist during the bye week.

Williams has been battling a sprained wrist, and has admitted that the injury has caused him to hesitate when on the playing field, and any hesitation in a game that moves as fast as the NFL does will surely affect a players impact on the game. If Williams opts to have the surgery, he may miss a week or two, but when he comes back he would expect to be healthy and able to be a better contributor, but would it be worth it to lose him for two weeks?

Defenseless Bills Suffer Fourth Loss in Heartbreaker to the Titans, 34-35

On Sunday the Buffalo Bills hosted the Tennessee Titans at Ralph Wilson Stadium, and suffered a heart breaking loss that will resonate with the Bills throughout the bye and until week nine when they play Houston Texans. In their week seven defeat, the Bills and Titans were going back and forth all game, but after the Bills scored at the end of the third quarter to take a 34-28 lead, there wasn’t another score until Nate Washington caught a 15-yard touchdown pass with 1:03 left. The Bills were unable to answer the score and now sit at 3-4, no longer tied for first in the AFC East.

This game featured some of the NFL’s best running backs, the Titans star running back, Chris Johnson, who started the season off slow but has been playing better in recent weeks, and the Bills dynamic duo of C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson. The two teams combined for a total of 363 rushing yards, but it was Chris Johnson who stole the show with 195 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns. The Bills two running backs both played well, getting 70 (Spiller) and 71 (Jackson) yards, and that was in addition to a great performance from Fitzpatrick.

Despite an excellent game from the Bills offense, it was once again their defense that cost them the game. The Bills defense has been a problem all season, and now their poor play has cost the team another loss and took them out of first place in the AFC East. They didn’t force any turnovers, and from Chris Johnson’s point of view, they were merely moving obstacles standing between him and the end zone. The Bills have the talent on offense to score with just about any team in the league, but their defense need to make some serious adjustments during the bye week. Unfortunately, this game will just go down as another one that got away.
