Game Preview: Bills Look to Rebound

It was not the start the Bills had hoped for. The team received praise for its offseason moves and are being projected by some to take a Wild Card berth and make the playoffs for the 1st time since 1999. The Bills return to Buffalo for their home opener in which their season opener did not go according to plan after a 48-28 loss to the Jets.

If the loss wasn’t enough, the Bills also lost Fred Jackson (knee) for four weeks and David Nelson (knee) for the season. With both out, the Bills will need to look towards C.J. Spiller to fill Jackson’s role. Spiller did a great job to show the Bills he’s capable of being a starting running back by rushing for a career-high 169 yards on 14 carries, including a 56-yard touchdown scamper against the Jets. And since Week 13 of last season, Spiller ranks fourth in yards from scrimmage with 757 yards. Spiller has yet to receiver 20 carries in a game to prove he can carry the workload of a number one back but he will have his chance to take the spotlight against a Chiefs defense that did not look good last week against the Falcons.

Filling Nelson’s role might be a little more difficult to fill. The Nelson injury will without question put more pressure of Stevie Johnson to produce. Donald Jones will get the chance to impress as the new number two receiver for Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Chiefs defense gave up

On defense, look for the defense to respond as a whole. The defensive line will be playing angry after a week in which they failed to record a sack. Look to defensive tackle Marcell Dareus to play inspired after the death of his younger brother this week. Dareus has said he is focused for this week and that he has appreciated the support he has received from the Bills and the fans.

The Chiefs started well but soon found themselves playing catchup last week with the Falcons. In the second half, the Chiefs turned the ball over three times as Matt Cassel played poorly.

Key to the Game: Force Chiefs to throw –  The Bills need to keep the Chiefs run game of Jamaal Charles and Peyton Hillis grounded. If they can force the Chiefs to make Cassel throw, I think the pass rush will be too much for the Chiefs and it will force Cassel into making some bad decisions. If the Chiefs can get a balance of run and pass the Bills can be in for another tough day.

Outcome: Ryan Fitzpatrick will have a bounce back game and C.J. Spiller will rush for over 100 yards. The Bills defense will be much improved and they will record the 1st win of the season. Bills win 24-14 in the home opener.

Do you think the Bills bounce back? Let me know in the comments…
